  39. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  40. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  41.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  42.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  43.   1990.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  44.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  45.  
  46.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
  47.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt
  48.   will ALSO capture the entire contents of a scrolling window!  In
  49.   addition, SnagIt also accepts input directly from the Windows
  50.   clipboard or a Windows bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt can
  51.   send the image to the printer, the clipboard, or a graphics file.
  52.  
  53.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  54.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  55.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  56.  
  57.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  58.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  59.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  60.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  62. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  63.  
  64.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  65.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  66.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  67.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  68.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  69.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  70.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  71.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  72.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  73.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  76. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  77. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  78.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  79.  
  80.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  81.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  82.  
  83.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  84.      Windows NT 3.51 (or higher) or Windows 95 installed and
  85.      configured on your system.
  86.  
  87.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  88.  
  89.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  90.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  91.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  92.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  116. 3.  GETTING HELP
  117. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  118. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  119.  
  120.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  121.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  122.   you'll need to use SnagIt.
  123.  
  124.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  125.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  126.  
  127.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  128.   the Help menu.
  129.  
  130.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  131.   select System Info from the Help menu.
  132.  
  133.   When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will
  134.   disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration
  135.   reminder screens.

  310. 5.  KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS

  314.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  315.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  316.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  317.        configured).
  318.  
  319. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  320.  
  321.     o  Does not support any of the SnagIt/32 v3.1 or later versions
  322.        additions or enhancements.

  324.     o  Does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail clients).

  333. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  334. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  335. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  336.  
  337.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  338.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  339.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  340.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  341.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  342.   the following steps:
  343.  
  344.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  345.  
  346.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  347.  
  348.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  349.  
  350.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  351.  
  352.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT 3.51 users:
  353.  
  354.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  355.      from the drop down menu.
  356.  
  357.   For all users:
  358.  
  359.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  360.           a:\setup
  361.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  362.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  363.      command line above.)
  364.  
  365.   5. Click on the OK button.
  366.  
  367.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  368.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  369.  
  370.  
  371. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  372.  
  373.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  374.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  375.  
  376.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
  377.  
  378.   1. Run the Windows Control Panel
  379.  
  380.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  381.  
  382.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  383.      by Windows.
  384.  
  385.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  386.  
  387.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT 3.51
  388.  
  389.   1. Select the FILE RUN menu option in Program Manager.
  390.  
  391.   2. Type in the command line the following:
  392.  
  393.      TSCUNST /UN
  394.  
  395.   3. Press OK to uninstall SnagIt.
  396.  
  397.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, or if you have
  398.   Windows 3.x, see the following section for uninstall instructions.
  399.  
  400.  
  401. 6.3  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  402.  
  403.   If you do not have Windows 95 or encountered a problem during the
  404.   uninstall, here are the steps you can take to manually uninstall
  405.   SnagIt from your computer.
  406.  
  407.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  408.  
  409.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  410.  
  411.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  412.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  413.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  414.  
  415.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  416.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  417.  
  418.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  419.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  420.      you wish to delete the program item.
  421.  
  422.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  423.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  424.  
  425.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  426.  
  427.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  428.  
  429.   For Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 users:
  430.  
  431.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  432.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  433.      button.
  434.  
  435.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  436.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  437.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  438.  
  439.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  440.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  441.  
  442.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  443.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  444.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  445.  
  446.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  447.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  448.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  449.  
  450.   For Windows NT 3.51 users:
  451.  
  452.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  453.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  454.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  455.      item.
  456.  
  457.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  458.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  459.  
  460.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  461.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm

  469. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  470. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  471.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  472.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  473.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  474.  
  475.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  476.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  477.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  478.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  479.  
  480.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  481.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  482.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  483.  
  484.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  485.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  486.   start Windows.
  487.  
  488. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  489.  
  490.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  491.  
  492.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  493.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  494.  
  495.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  496.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  497.      printer for printing.
  498.  
  499.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  500.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  501.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  502.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  503.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  504.      file.)
  505.  
  506.   o  Printer Scale is set to Fit on Page.  This means that SnagIt will
  507.      output the captured image (on paper) at a size similar as the
  508.      image appears on the Windows screen but will reduce the image if
  509.      it is longer than one page.
  510.  
  511.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  512.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  513.  
  514.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  515.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  516.  
  517. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  518.  
  519.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  520.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  521.  
  522.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  523.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  524.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  525.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  526.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  527.   file.
  528.  
  529. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  530.  
  531.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  532.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  533.  
  534.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  535.                   regions and windows to capture.
  536.  
  537.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  538.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  539.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  540.

  542. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  543. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  544.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  545.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  546.   public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  547.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.
  548.  
  549.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  550.  
  551.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  552.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  553.   further payment.  The single-user license price is $39.95.
  554.  
  555.   When you register SnagIt Twin Pack, you have the option of
  556.   requesting a registered version of the software on diskette or of
  557.   requesting a software key to register the version you have. The
  558.   software key immediately removes all registration reminder screens
  559.   and evaluation expiration dates.
  560.  
  561.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  562.  
  563.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  564.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  565.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  566.   price is $200.00.
  567.  
  568.   Registration Instructions
  569.  
  570.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  571.  
  572.   2.  Select How to Register from the menu.
  573.  
  574.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  575.       information in the fields provided.
  576.  
  577.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  578.             Your software key will be personalized for that name
  579.             ONLY.  Your key will NOT not work if you change this name
  580.             after you have sent in your registration.
  581.  
  582.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  583.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  584.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  585.       your Product ID number.
  586.  
  587.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  588.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While
  589.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
  590.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
